Many people struggle with their weight because they cannot stop stress eating. Stress not only causes you to overeat, but it can also cause you to crave foods that are unhealthy. Fortunately, there are several things that you can do in order to avoid stress eating.
Identify Your Stressors
Controlling your stress is key to avoiding emotional eating. While you may not be able to avoid your stressors completely, self-awareness and therapeutic support can help you to identify and control them.
Eat On Schedule
Eat when hungry and stop when full. Avoid skipping meals, or at least snack during the day to keep your metabolism up. Remember, you are much more likely to overeat if you go ours with a grumbling stomach!
Balance Your Cravings
Rather than deprive yourself, focus on disciplined eating that curbs your cravings. Build a robust plate of balanced nutrients, switching out old favorites with healthier alternatives – fruit with a bit of whipped cream is a great dessert! Though not every night, allow yourself to splurge on occasion.
Exercise
Manage stress, boost your mood, and improve self-confidence with exercise. Even if it’s just a walk around the block – get moving!
Reach Out for Help
If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to someone you trust for support. Talk to a family member or friend about how you are feeling, or discuss your concerns with a professional. Asking for help is not weak!
